Reality television celebrity Mike “The Situation” Sorrentino was recently charged with simple assault after an altercation at a Middletown, New Jersey tanning salon that he co-owns with his brother.
At first, news sources could not confirm whom he had gotten in a fight with or why the fight had occurred, but it was later revealed that the fight had been with his brother.
The “Jersey Shore” reality star posted $500 bail and was released from the Middletown Police station. He told a photographer outside the station that the fight occurred because his brother “was not running the store correctly, so I had to go in there and clean house, in more ways than one.”
Reportedly, his brother was not arrested or charged in the incident.
Under New Jersey law, simple assault is considered a disorderly person offense. Simple assault is committed if a defendant purposely, knowingly or carelessly causes bodily injury to another person.
If convicted on a simple assault charge, a defendant can face up to a $1,000 fine and can be sentenced up to six months in jail. However, a prison sentence is highly unlikely if this is a first offense. If a defendant has not been convicted of more than three disorderly persons offenses, he or she may be eligible to have a conviction expunged from their record at least five years after the sentence is carried out.
It is possible for such a case to be dismissed, which would mean no record and no fine.
